Freeciv 2.1.2 was released just before Christmas of 2007. My package is now available here.
In addition, an Universal Binary version of 2.1.2 is also available at the above URL. The game UI is different (SDL), but the underlying game engine is the same. The big advantage, in addition to being Universal, is that it runs on top of Aqua/Quartz without X11. Check it out!
